AFTERCARE

Colonic Hydrotherapy Aftercare

Many people notice positive benefits immediately after a colonic hydrotherapy treatment. However, maintaining these benefits also depends on the choices you make afterwards. Taking an active role in reviewing your diet, lifestyle and wellbeing can help support your digestive health long-term. Regular colonics may also form part of your ongoing wellness journey.

Immediately After Your Treatment

If possible, allow yourself time to rest and relax after your session. Your body benefits from a period of “rest and digest”, so try to take things gently for the remainder of the day.

Please follow any personalised advice discussed during your appointment and:

  • Eat light, nourishing meals
  • Chew your food thoroughly
  • Drink an extra litre of room temperature or warm water over the next 48 hours
  • Avoid rushing meals or overeating

During your treatment, your body absorbs water, so you may notice you pass more urine than usual afterwards. This is completely normal and should settle quickly.

You may also experience:

  • Mild bloating or trapped wind
  • Increased bowel sounds or “rumbling”
  • Temporary tiredness or feeling a little washed out

These are common responses as the bowel settles and rebalances itself.

Healing Responses

Some clients experience what is often referred to as a “healing response” following treatment. This is usually mild and temporary, lasting between 24–48 hours.

Possible symptoms may include:

  • Tiredness
  • Mild headaches
  • Cold-like symptoms
  • Skin breakouts
  • Increased urination
  • Temporary changes in bowel movements

These responses can occur as the body adjusts and eliminates waste products more efficiently. Rest, hydration and light meals usually help symptoms settle quickly.

Not everyone experiences this response, but it is useful to be aware that it can happen.

Hydration

Good hydration is extremely important after your treatment.

Aim to drink:

  • 2–3 litres of filtered water daily
  • Small amounts regularly throughout the day

Try to avoid drinking large amounts with meals, as this may dilute digestive enzymes and affect digestion. Ideally:

  • Avoid drinking 30 minutes before meals
  • Sip minimally during meals
  • Wait 30 minutes after eating before drinking larger amounts

Try to reduce:

  • Alcohol
  • Fizzy drinks
  • Excess caffeine
  • Sugary drinks

Warm herbal teas such as peppermint, fennel or chamomile can be soothing, especially if you experience bloating or wind.

Dietary & Lifestyle Guidance

Chew Thoroughly

Digestion begins in the mouth. Eating slowly and chewing properly can significantly improve digestion and nutrient absorption.

Choose Natural, Whole Foods

Focus on fresh, natural and minimally processed foods wherever possible.

Helpful choices include:

  • Plenty of colourful vegetables
  • Homemade soups
  • Light proteins such as fish and chicken
  • Beans, pulses, nuts and seeds
  • Organic and grass-fed produce where available

Aim to “eat the rainbow” to increase antioxidants and nutritional variety.

Reduce Processed Foods

Try to avoid highly processed convenience foods, particularly those with long ingredient lists, additives or artificial ingredients.

Reduce Sugar & Artificial Sweeteners

Minimise refined sugars and artificial sweeteners where possible. If needed, choose natural alternatives such as honey.

Reduce Yeast & Mucus-Forming Foods

Some people find it helpful to reduce:

  • Bread and yeast-heavy products
  • Beer, wine and lager
  • Blue cheeses and yeast extracts
  • Excess dairy products
  • Refined white flour products

Alternative options such as coconut milk may be gentler for some people.

Bloating After a Colonic

Occasionally, you may experience temporary bloating or abdominal discomfort after treatment.

This can happen because:

  • Trapped gas begins to move through the bowel
  • The bowel muscles are adjusting after releasing retained waste
  • The digestive system is rebalancing itself

This sensation is usually temporary and improves naturally.

To help ease discomfort:

  • Drink warm fluids
  • Eat lightly
  • Avoid carbonated drinks
  • Take a warm bath
  • Rest if needed

Important Information

Please seek advice from your GP or healthcare professional before making significant dietary or lifestyle changes, especially if you:

  • Take prescribed medication
  • Have existing medical conditions
  • Are unsure whether changes are suitable for you

Colonic hydrotherapy should not be considered a replacement for medical care or professional medical advice.

If you have ongoing digestive symptoms or health concerns, please consult your GP.
